CMARN Strengthens Capacity, Governance and Collaboration on Climate Mobility
From June 3rd to 6th 2026, members of the Climate Mobility Africa Research Network (CMARN) participated in a series of activities that strengthened research capacity, reinforced network governance, and promoted collaboration on migration, environment and climate change (MECC) across Africa.
From 3rd - 5th June, CMARN members took part in the Capacity Building Workshop on Research on Migration, Environment and Climate Change to Inform Public Policies, organized by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) through its Climate Change and Migration Data Programme (CCMD) and hosted by IOM Tunisia.
The workshop brought together researchers and practitioners from across the continent to deepen their understanding of the migration, environment, climate nexus and strengthen the policy relevance of their research. Through interactive sessions, participants explored research methodologies, climate mobility data, policy frameworks, stakeholder engagement, and communication strategies for translating evidence into policy action.

On 6th June, CMARN held an exchange with the Network of African Migration Academics (NAMAN). The exchange created a valuable platform for dialogue and peer learning between the two networks, allowing participants to share experiences on research coordination, network development, knowledge dissemination, and engagement with policymakers. Discussions highlighted the importance of collaboration among African research networks in generating evidence and supporting policy responses to evolving migration challenges.
Lastly, also on June 6th, CMARN reached an important milestone by convening its first in-person Steering Group Meeting since the Network’s establishment. The meeting provided an opportunity for Steering Group members to review progress, discuss strategic priorities, strengthen governance arrangements, and identify opportunities to further expand the Network’s impact in advancing climate mobility research and policy engagement across Africa.

Together, these activities demonstrate CMARN’s commitment to strengthening African-led research, fostering strategic partnerships, and supporting evidence-based approaches to addressing migration, environment and climate change challenges across the continent.
